Advantages And Disadvantages Between Magnesium And Aluminum

2022-10-26

Advantage:

1 The melting cost is only 2/3 of that of aluminum

2 Die casting production efficiency is 25% higher than aluminum, metal mold casting is 300-500K higher than aluminum, and lost foam casting is 200% higher than aluminum

3 The surface quality and appearance of magnesium castings are obviously better than aluminum (because the thermal load of the mold is reduced, the inspection frequency can be reduced)

4 The mold life is twice that of aluminum (or more, depending on the cavity shape)

5 The bevel angle of magnesium can be small (the subsequent machining can be eliminated), and the surface is well formed (because the viscosity of magnesium is low)

Disadvantage:

1 Compared with aluminum die casting, magnesium die casting has a higher residual waste rate (compared with aluminum die casting waste output rate).

2 The investment in the production equipment of magnesium die casting is high. Compared with aluminum gravity / low pressure / nitrate mold and other processes, magnesium die casting machine is very expensive (because of the need for higher clamping force and filling injection speed), of course its productivity is 4 times of the former.

3 Magnesium die-casting requires higher trial cost and longer trial production time, while steel parts (manufacturing using simple welding technology and processing according to drawings) or plastic parts (low-cost prototype tooling can be used) are much simpler.

4 Compared with aluminum low pressure or metal mold casting, magnesium die casting requires higher mold costs. Because the die-casting mold is large and complex, it has to withstand high clamping force (of course, high productivity can also reduce the cost of a single product).

5 Compared with aluminum die-casting, magnesium die-casting has a 50K higher burning rate, which is 4% to 2% (because of the higher surface activity of magnesium).

6 Recovery cost of magnesium die-casting chips. Higher than aluminum, dry magnesium chips are not easy to recycle, and wet ones are even more difficult. You must be very careful to prevent fire.
