The binary alloy composed of silicon and calcium belongs to the category of ferroalloys. Its main components are silicon and calcium and also contain different amounts of impurities such as iron, aluminum, carbon, sulfur, and phosphorus. In the steel industry, it is used as calcium additives, deoxidizers, desulfurizes and denaturants for non-metallic inclusions. In the cast iron industry it is used as an inoculant and denaturant.
Part Two: Usage
Due to the strong affinity between calcium and oxygen, sulfur, hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon in molten steel, si-Ca alloy is mainly used for deoxidation, degassing and sulfur fixation in molten steel. The addition of calcium silicon to molten steel produces a strong exothermic effect. Calcium turns into calcium vapor in molten steel, which has a stirring effect on molten steel and is conducive to the floating of nonmetallic inclusions. Silicon alloy deoxidization will produce non-metallic inclusions with large particles and easy to float, and change the shape and properties of non-metallic inclusions. Therefore, silicon and calcium alloys are used to produce clean steel, high-quality steel with low oxygen and low sulfur, and special properties steel with very low oxygen and low sulfur. The addition of silica calcium alloy can eliminate problems, such as steel and aluminum root nodules form the final deoxidizer in the ladle nozzle, blocked nozzle in the intermediate tank continuous casting steel furnace refining technology, deoxidization, desulfurization with silica-calcium powder or core line, so the content of oxygen and sulfur in steel is reduced to very low levels. The morphology of sulfide in steel was controlled and the utilization rate of calcium was improved. In the production of cast iron, in addition to reduction and purification, si-Ca alloy also contributes to the formation of fine or spherical graphite, making graphite evenly distributed in gray cast iron, reducing the tendency of white to increase silicon, desulphurizing to improve cast iron quality.
